Eight Types of Photography Every Horse Owner Should Consider

I'll be using my own horse Wasabi as an example because I have done almost every type of session with him over the years.

1. Horse & Rider Portraits

Horse and Rider Portraits at least once (if not yearly) are a great way to show your bond with your horse and capture you and your equine partner at every stage in your journey. Whether you recently purchased your first horse or are caring for an older horse you have owned for most of their life, it can be so rewarding to have those memories captured. I always recommend booking portrait sessions while you and your horse are doing well because you never know what can happen with horses and it is always better to have those images to look back on.

2. Black Background Portraits

Black Background Portraits are a classic and time-less way to capture the beauty and grace of your horse. They allow you to focus specifically on highlighting their best qualities while also displaying their unique personalities. Fine Art sessions like this also make great wall art for your home, office, and even barn!

3. White Background Portraits

Similar to Black Background Sessions, White Background portraits spotlight your horse in a different way. They can provide a lighter vibe which can be especially great for a more neutral of brightly decorated setting when considering wall art.

4. Painted Background Portraits

If you go even further and want a more dramatic pop of color for your wall or to show off on social media, I would recommend a Painted Background session. These can be neutral colors or a color that complements your horse's tack or your personal favorite color. I love Painted Background images for both portraits and action (riding or liberty) photos to add a dramatic flair and some have even likened them to paintings.

5. Show Photos

While I don't personally show, one of my regrets is having few high quality riding images with my horse Wasabi. Mostly I have attained riding images from lending friends or family my camera and hoping for an in-focus shot with decent timing. I know we have ALL been there! While a well times screenshot from a phone video can be great especially with how high-tech phone cameras are these days, it will not compare to a camera with a skilled equine photographer due to image size and resolutions degrading over time and not holding up to printing.

If you show, I highly recommend paying your show photographer! This may be hiring a private photographer where show venues allow, signing up in advance for the official photographer to capture you, or buying photos from photographers who offer free proof galleries.

6. Celebratory Photos

It can be so fun to involve our equine partners in milestones in our lives, such as graduation/senior portraits, engagements, and even weddings! I had the pleasure of bringing Wasabi to Northwestern University when I graduated from college and it was such a cool and unique experience. I was very involved with Wasabi during my college years spending my free time at the barn to de-stress and see my equestrian friends, so it only felt fitting to take my graduation photos with him.

7. Unique Fine Art Portraits

I offer a range of unique Fine Art add-ons to sessions that can enhance equine sessions with add-ons equine jewelry, glitter, and gold leaf or more causal and fun sessions for holidays (such as Birthday Cake smash, Easter basket sessions, and maternity sessions for horses). While not for everyone, these add-ons can create unique and special images that can be enjoyed digitally and on your wall. Fun, candid sessions can also be great sessions to announce achievements of your horse, create fun memories and photos, and even more!

8. Holiday Black Background Portraits

In addition to the other Fine Art sessions I offer, I also offer Holiday wreath black background sessions seasonally that clients often use for holiday cards and posting on social media. Most of my wreaths are more traditional Christmas colors, but I also offer a gold and white frosted wreath (not pictured) or allow the client to provide their own. I offer free holiday lights overlays and snow overlays for these sessions as well.

I hope you consider giving some of these ideas a try!

While I have had years to photograph my own horse and have done almost every session possible with my horse, I encourage every horse owner to look into different options that they feel best reflect their horse, their relationship with their horse, and their own personal style for what they hope to decorate their walls with and remember their equine partners by if they are no longer in their lives.

I hope I gave you some inspiration even if not looking to book now! Let me know if you would like to hear more information about any of these types of sessions or would like to book a session!
